VISA GRANTED · REVIEWED 26 SEPTEMBER 2026

Your Australian visa was granted. What should you check before travel?

Use your written grant and current Home Affairs record to confirm the trip you can actually make. This guide is for visa holders preparing to travel; conditions and dates vary by visa and person.

01 / READ THE GRANT

Check the notice itself, not just the email subject

Open the complete Visa Grant Notification. Match your name and travel document to the grant. Note the visa subclass and stream, grant and expiry dates, any first-entry or must-not-arrive-after date, entries allowed, permitted stay and every condition. An expiry date, last arrival date and period of stay can answer different questions; do not treat them as one date. The wording on your own grant controls your plan.

If travelling with family, check each traveller's own grant. A grant is not a promise of entry or permission for activities outside its conditions. If a date, identity detail or condition appears wrong or unclear, resolve it through Home Affairs or qualified help before relying on a booking. If an original application answer was wrong, read the continuing correction duty →

02 / VERIFY THE CURRENT VISA

Use VEVO for the visa that is in effect

Home Affairs' Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) shows the current in-effect visa, including its expiry, must-not-arrive-after date, stay period and conditions. To check your own record, use an accepted travel document and a TRN, current visa grant number or other accepted reference. Compare what VEVO displays with the trip you plan, especially work and study rights if those matter to you.

VEVO does not show an application still being assessed or a visa that is not yet in effect. A missing result therefore needs the official error guidance, not an assumption that a grant has disappeared. Keep the complete grant notice while resolving a mismatch.

03 / CHECK THE PASSPORT

Travel with the document linked to the visa

Home Affairs says a visa is electronically attached to the passport used in the application. Bring a current, valid passport or other travel document and any older document still linked to your visa. Check the passport details you gave Home Affairs against the document you will use at check-in.

Does Australia require six months left on every passport? The Australian Embassy in Tokyo says there is no minimum passport-validity period to apply for an Australian visa or enter Australia, while Home Affairs' border guidance requires a current, valid document. A carrier, transit country or onward destination may have its own requirements. Check your passport's expiry and the complete journey rather than treating a general six-month warning as an Australian entry rule. Passport-validity guidance checked 7 October 2026.

If you obtain a new passport, tell Home Affairs so it can link it to your existing visa. ETA subclass 601 is different: Home Affairs says an existing ETA cannot transfer to a new passport; you need to apply for a new ETA using the new passport. Allow time to resolve the change before departure.

COMMON CONDITION GUIDES

Have a condition number on your grant?

These links help you find general explanations for some common numbers. They do not tell us which conditions are attached to your visa or determine permission to work, study or remain. Use your complete notice and current VEVO record first.

If your number is absent, use the full Home Affairs condition reference . Do not substitute another condition's summary because its number looks similar.

PERMANENT VISA TRAVEL · CHECKED 28 SEPTEMBER 2026

A permanent visa has a separate return travel facility

Permanent residence does not give an automatic right to return from overseas. Check the travel facility in your grant and VEVO against your planned return date, not just the date you leave Australia. Home Affairs says a first permanent visa usually has a five-year travel facility; your own current record controls the actual dates.

If that facility has expired or will expire while you are overseas, read the Resident Return visa (subclass 155 or 157) rules and apply early where needed. An application is not a grant. Home Affairs' 15 September travel notice says the required RRV must be granted to return, and the passport used for travel must be linked correctly. Each travelling family member who needs an RRV has their own application.

Do not treat a Visitor visa or ETA as a replacement for an RRV. Home Affairs warns that returning on a temporary visa instead can affect permanent residence status, citizenship eligibility and entitlements. Read the complete RRV eligibility, evidence, fee and application-location rules before choosing a route; this section does not determine which RRV you qualify for.

If you are in Australia as a permanent resident and do not intend to travel, Home Affairs says you do not need an RRV simply because the permanent visa's travel facility expires. Australian citizenship, and an older Authority to Return or Return Endorsement, have separate travel rules.

Home Affairs' Travel Facility Expiry Reminder service sends qualifying reminders 60 days before expiry, subject to its recorded-email and pending-application conditions. Keep contact and passport details current and check the date yourself rather than waiting for a reminder.

04 / PREPARE FOR ARRIVAL · DECLARATIONS CHECKED 28 SEPTEMBER 2026

Prepare for the passenger card or an invited digital declaration

Most arriving passengers complete an Incoming Passenger Card (IPC); ABF lists exemptions. The card is provided on the flight or ship, or in the arrival terminal. Complete the actual card in English, on both sides, and sign and date it.

Use a translated sample to understand the questions

ABF links printable samples in many languages. The Spanish, Urdu and Filipino samples are marked as examples: use them to understand the questions, then complete the actual English card. They are not cards to submit. Keep your Australian address, flight or ship details and contact information accessible privately. Read each question carefully: passport nationality, country of boarding and residence are different fields.

Check whether you are invited to the current ATD pilot

The Australia Travel Declaration (ATD) is a digital alternative to the passenger card for invited passengers on eligible Qantas journeys. It is not a universal requirement. The current FAQ requires the Qantas app, English completion and eligibility for airport kiosks and SmartGates. Ineligible travellers and people choosing not to participate use the paper card.

An invited traveller can submit through the app up to 72 hours before departure to Australia. Keep the declaration pass accessible and the phone charged; ABF says a copy also arrives by email. Changes can be made through the app. Cancellation, rescheduling or a different arrival airport may require a paper card instead. If the pass is inaccessible, an officer can help.

The July 2026 announcement sets out a planned nationwide rollout by the end of 2027. That future plan does not mean every flight uses ATD today. Follow the current invitation and official instructions for your own trip. A declaration does not replace your visa grant or change its conditions.

Check goods before packing and answer truthfully

Food, plant and animal products and other goods can need declaration or permission. Use the current ABF instructions for the exact item. A sample card, packing list or visa grant does not clear an item for entry. If uncertain, follow the actual declaration instructions and ask an officer.

05 / IF SOMETHING DOES NOT MATCH

Pause the booking and use the official channel

If the passport, dates, entries or conditions do not match your intended trip, check the grant notice and current VEVO record again. Follow the official passport-change process for a new document and the VEVO error instructions for a record problem. If you are unsure whether an activity is permitted, check the exact visa condition before travelling or accepting work or study.

Do not assume that a new passport automatically updates an ETA, or that an agent's copy of a grant replaces the official record. Keep personal reference numbers private.
