AUSTRALIA TRANSIT · REVIEWED 3 OCTOBER 2026

Do you need a visa to transit through Australia?

A short connection is not automatically visa-free. Check your travel document, onward ticket, destination entry documents and the airport transfer before choosing a visa route.

01 / MAP THE ENTIRE JOURNEY

Start with the flights and the airport

Write down your arrival airport and terminal, the time your flight lands, the onward departure time, and whether the next flight goes to a third country. Ask the airline whether your bags are checked through, whether you need a new boarding pass and whether changing terminals means crossing immigration. A connection that looks short on the booking can still require entry into Australia.

Home Affairs warns that airport transit facilities can be limited and arrangements change. Check the current airport information and confirm your exact itinerary with the airline before relying on an airside transfer.

Connecting from Dili through Darwin?

The Australian Embassy in Dili flags flights from Dili to Darwin for immigration clearance, baggage collection and recheck before an onward international flight. Do not rely only on an eligible passport or a connection shorter than eight hours: if your transfer requires clearing immigration, TWOV does not cover that entry.

Confirm the current arrangements for your booked flights with the airline, including through-checked bags, boarding passes and terminal access. Home Affairs warns that airport arrangements can change. Then check the entry option that fits your actual passport and visa status; do not assume every traveller needs a new Transit 771. An existing suitable Australian visa may matter.

02 / TRANSIT WITHOUT A VISA

Every TWOV condition must fit

The official Transit Without a Visa (TWOV) rule is for eligible travel documents and specific connections. You must arrive by aircraft, hold a confirmed air ticket leaving Australia for a third country within eight hours, have the documents required to enter that destination, and stay in the airport transit lounge without clearing Australian immigration for any reason. Collecting or transferring baggage, or reaching another terminal through immigration, can make TWOV unavailable even when the time and passport otherwise fit.

The official list includes citizens of named countries and special categories for certain Hong Kong and Taiwan residents, Indian official passports and diplomatic passports. These categories have qualifications and exceptions. Check your exact passport type on the live list; an ordinary Indian passport is not the same as an Indian official passport. A residence permit in an eligible country alone is not a substitute for its listed travel document.

03 / WHEN TWOV DOES NOT FIT

Check Transit visa 771 or another valid visa

The Transit visa (subclass 771) allows an eligible traveller to enter Australia while travelling to another country and stay no longer than 72 hours. Home Affairs currently lists the visa charge as free. You must be outside Australia when you apply and when it decides the application, have a confirmed onward booking within 72 hours and the documents needed for the destination. Each traveller, including a child, needs a separate application.

A Transit visa is not permission for a longer visit. If your actual plans involve a longer stay, compare a Visitor or other suitable visa instead. A confirmed booking does not guarantee a decision by its departure date; check the live processing guide and wait for the written decision.

04 / ALREADY HAVE AN AUSTRALIAN VISA?

Check before applying for another one

Home Affairs says a valid Australian temporary or permanent visa that permits transit may mean you do not need Transit 771. Check your current grant notice and VEVO for travel validity, entries and conditions. If a Transit visa is granted, it will likely end most other Australian visas you hold. That can matter if you intend to use the earlier visa later.

Some visas are single-entry, while the duration of others starts on first arrival even for a short connection. Check the specific grant rather than assuming a transit will leave it untouched.

05 / BEFORE DEPARTURE

Confirm the documents and the transfer

  1. Open the current TWOV list and the Transit 771 page for your exact passport and journey.
  2. Confirm the onward destination will admit you with the documents you hold.
  3. Ask the airline whether you remain airside, collect bags, change terminals or need to clear immigration.
  4. If a visa is needed, wait for a grant and read its dates and conditions before travel.
  5. If the itinerary or airport service changes, check the transit question again.

This guide cannot decide boarding or entry. Stateless people and refugees should not rely on the TWOV page's country list because Home Affairs says that information does not apply to them.

Make a private transit checklist

Choose your travel passport and residence in the planner, then select Transit. It now shows whether the selected citizenship appears on Home Affairs' named-country list, while flagging separate passport categories. The downloaded checklist helps you verify the route with official sources and your airline; it does not give an eligibility verdict.
