Do not assume everyone needs the same tests
Home Affairs says the need for health examinations depends on the visa, intended stay, proposed activities, the country where you apply and individual circumstances. For an application managed in ImmiAccount, open View health assessment there. If the Department needs examinations, it provides an Organise health examinations link and the required list. If no link appears, do not invent a standard medical package.
For permanent and provisional visas, Home Affairs says applicants and family members applying with them must have health examinations; in some circumstances, family members who are not travelling may also need examinations. Temporary visa requirements depend on the factors above. Follow each person's own instructions, especially for children. Category note checked 9 October 2026. Health examinations are separate from a biometrics request for fingerprints or a facial image.

Use the referral letter before contacting a clinic
Home Affairs gives the applicant a list of examinations and a HAP ID, the identifier clinics use to locate the health case. Applicants using the health-assessment process in ImmiAccount can get it from the referral letter there after completing the health-history step. A paper applicant receives it in a Health Examination List or equivalent letter. The clinic cannot locate the case in eMedical without that ID.
Some applicants can use My Health Declarations before lodging to obtain a HAP ID for upfront examinations. That option does not cover every subclass and must not be used after an application is lodged. Results are generally valid for 12 months, so an early examination may need repeating if processing takes longer. Check the official timing page before paying for an upfront appointment.
Already examined in the last 12 months? Home Affairs says you might not need every examination again. Check the new referral for the actual examinations required; a previous appointment does not automatically remove a current request. Recent-examination note checked 9 October 2026. Inside and outside Australia use different services
Outside Australia, Home Affairs directs applicants to its approved panel physicians or clinics. Inside Australia, it names Bupa Medical Visa Services as the migration medical provider. Check the current provider directory and your letter; a regular doctor or a clinic advertised by an agent is not automatically authorised to perform an Australian immigration examination.
For the appointment, Home Affairs says to bring the original valid passport and the referral or Health Examination List containing the HAP ID. It also lists prescription spectacles or contact lenses, existing specialist reports and prior chest x-rays where relevant. Ask the provider about its charge and any local preparation instructions before attending.

Check submission, then watch the visa application
Approved clinics use eMedical where available to submit examination results to Home Affairs. The official eMedical Client service can show whether results were submitted; the panel clinic can also confirm submission. If you applied online, ImmiAccount shows health-assessment processing information. A completed appointment or submitted result is not a visa grant, and the clinic does not decide the visa.
Home Affairs may need further examinations or assessment after the initial results. Its health page says an applicant's health-assessment results are valid for 12 months from the examinations, but the application still depends on the selected visa's other requirements. Keep medical information in official health channels and do not send it to MyAusVisa.
Tell Home Affairs through ImmiAccount
If you cannot complete the examinations within the timeframe in your Request for Health Examination letter, Home Affairs says to attach details through ImmiAccount. Explain the real obstacle and follow any response; a booked appointment does not automatically extend the deadline. Check the current letter and application messages for what else is needed.
Keep the key steps on your own device
Download the preparation list and blank record for your actual request deadline, booking, provider contact and clinic submission check. Keep it private; it has no diagnosis or test-result fields.
