Visiting family or joining them in Australia?

Start with the purpose of the trip and your relationship to the person in Australia. A temporary visit and a plan to live together use different visa pathways.

01 / TEMPORARY VISIT

Visiting relatives does not always require a sponsored visa

For a short visit, check the visa available to your passport and circumstances. The Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist stream can cover visiting family or friends without a formal sponsor. Its Sponsored Family stream is a separate visitor route with a sponsor and its own requirements; a sponsor may be asked for a security bond. Neither is a route to take a job or settle permanently.

If a relative invites you to stay, a truthful invitation can help explain the visit. It is different from sponsoring a Sponsored Family stream application. Read both streams before choosing one, and check the full visa conditions before you apply.

02 / FAMILY MIGRATION

Match the relationship to the correct category

Home Affairs groups family migration into partner, parent, child and other-family visas. Partner routes can concern a spouse, de facto partner or prospective spouse. Parent, child and other-family routes have different definitions and sponsor rules; being related to someone in Australia alone does not establish eligibility.

Write down the exact relationship, the family member's Australian citizenship or residence status, both people's locations and whether the aim is a visit or living together. Then use the official family finder and open the exact subclass and stream page it suggests. Some routes are temporary and others permanent.

03 / EVIDENCE

Prepare a relationship record for the selected visa

The chosen visa page controls the document list. Check identity and name details for the applicant and sponsor, evidence of their relationship and sponsor status, and any child or parent documents that apply. Partner applicants should follow the specific page's evidence instructions for their relationship. If a child is involved, check custody or consent requirements where relevant. Translate non-English documents as Home Affairs directs.

Keep a simple file tracker, label each item clearly and check that dates and names agree across the application. Do not upload a generic bundle in place of the route's current “Gather your documents” instructions. Health, character and biometrics steps may depend on the visa or a later request.

04 / LODGEMENT

Check whether the route uses ImmiAccount or paper

Family applications do not share one submission method. Home Affairs says Partner and Sponsored Parent (Temporary) applications can be made online in ImmiAccount, while Parent, Child and Other Family applications use the relevant paper forms. Check the exact subclass page for its current form, place-of-application rules, signatures, fee and address or online steps before lodging.

If a form or document requirement is unclear, follow the visa page and its linked instructions. Keep a copy of what you submit and use the channel specified for later requests or changed circumstances.

05 / TIMING AND DECISION

Plan around the route's real processing rules

Home Affairs says family visa processing varies. Parent and Other Family applications are subject to capping and queueing, so a general processing-time figure for another family visa can be misleading. Check the official processing page and the selected visa's current information; neither gives an individual grant date.

Read any written decision notice and its conditions before making irreversible travel or life plans. If an adviser offers a guaranteed outcome, check who is authorised to give immigration assistance and remember that Home Affairs makes the visa decision.
