COUNTRY GUIDE · UPDATED 27 SEPTEMBER 2026

Australia visa guide for Canadian passport holders.

Canadian passport holders can check ETA 601 for a short visit or the separate first Working Holiday 417 for an extended holiday with short-term work. The first-417 age range for Canada is 18–35 inclusive.

START WITH THE PASSPORT

Which visa should you check?

A Canadian passport is on the ETA and first-417 passport lists. Living in Canada or holding Canadian permanent residence with a different passport does not make that passport eligible. Check the actual travel document, purpose and prior Working Holiday Maker history.

The ETA (subclass 601) may fit a short visitor trip. Eligibility depends on your exact circumstances. Home Affairs decides applications.

COUNTRY-SPECIFIC NOTE

What else should you know?

The Australian High Commission in Canada warns that ETA applications are made in the official app, not through third-party websites. Its staff do not manage visa applications or answer individual visa questions; use Home Affairs for visa and biometrics instructions.

CANADIAN PASSPORT OR CANADIAN RESIDENCE?

ETA eligibility follows the travel passport

Home Affairs lists Canada among the passport jurisdictions eligible to apply for an ETA (subclass 601). Canadian permanent residence, a Canadian address or a Canadian visa does not make a different passport ETA-eligible. A non-citizen travel document or certificate of identity is not an eligible ETA passport either. Check the passport you will actually use to travel.

If you hold another passport, declare it in the ETA application. If you are also an Australian citizen, Home Affairs says you cannot apply for an ETA as a foreign visitor; check the Australian citizen travel-document guidance instead.

THE OFFICIAL APPLICATION CHANNEL

Apply in the Australian ETA app, not on an ETA website

  1. Check the ETA page for your passport, visit purpose and conditions. Apply while outside Australia and remain outside when Home Affairs decides the ETA.
  2. Use the Australian ETA app linked by Home Affairs. Scan the passport you will travel on, complete the live photo and answer the questions accurately. Each traveller, including a child, needs an individual application.
  3. Review every scanned passport detail and declare any other passports before paying the app service charge and submitting. Watch your email for the written result or instructions asking for more information.

The Australian High Commission in Canada warns that websites claiming to lodge an ETA may charge excessive fees or promise faster processing. It says the ETA itself has no visa application charge, but the official app has a service fee. Check the current amount on the government page before paying anyone.

IF THE ETA IS NOT APPROVED IMMEDIATELY

Read the letter before applying again

The Australian High Commission in Canada explains that some ETA requests need further assessment. If the app does not approve yours, follow the instructions in the email or letter. Home Affairs says a request for further processing has a link to an online form in ImmiAccount; answer its questions, attach the requested evidence and Form 1554 as directed. Do not send a new ETA application through the app while this request is being assessed. The High Commission warns that repeating it can produce the same result and another app service fee. A delay is not a reason to pay a third-party site for an “expedited” ETA.

An ETA permits a short visit, generally up to three months on each entry during its validity; it does not permit employment or living in Australia through repeated visits. If your plans do not fit, compare the overseas Visitor 600 Tourist stream or another appropriate visa. If you receive a new passport, Home Affairs says the old ETA cannot be transferred and you must apply for a new one with the new passport.

CANADIAN PASSPORT / FIRST WORKING HOLIDAY 417

Check the 18–35 age range before a working holiday

For an extended holiday with short-term work, a Canadian citizen holding a valid Canadian passport can check the first Working Holiday visa (subclass 417). Home Affairs lists Canada’s age range as 18–35 inclusive at application. Its deadline is measured in Australian Eastern time on the day before the 36th birthday, including when applying from Canada. An ETA is for a short visit and does not permit taking a job; Canadian residence with another passport does not create Canadian first-417 eligibility.

Apply online from outside Australia and remain outside until Home Affairs decides the first visa. Check whether you have previously entered on a 417 or 462, and the current funds, health, character and dependent-child criteria. Each applicant applies separately. A first 417 normally allows 12 months from first entry, short-term work subject to the usual same-employer condition, and up to four months of study. Read your own grant’s entry deadline and work conditions before booking or starting work.

If considering a second or third 417, check the separate specified-work, age and application-location rules. The UK passport exception to specified work does not automatically apply to a Canadian passport. A grant of an ETA after a 417 grant has different effects from a new eVisitor or Transit visa; read the official first-417 travel instructions before applying for another visa or making an early entry.

DOCUMENTS TO PREPARE

Build a clear, consistent application

For eVisitor or ETA, follow the prompts for that visa. The points below are useful preparation questions, especially if you need to consider Visitor 600; they are not a fixed attachment list for a short-visit visa. For a Working Holiday visa, use its own eligibility and evidence page.

  • Passport and identity documents that match your application.
  • A simple account of your travel dates, purpose and accommodation.
  • Evidence that you can fund the trip, or details of a supporter.
  • Relevant work, study, family or residence evidence that explains your circumstances.
  • Invitation details if you are visiting someone.
  • Clear scans and translations where required.

Home Affairs can request additional evidence, biometrics or health checks. See its document preparation advice and our biometrics guide.
