COUNTRY GUIDE · UPDATED 27 SEPTEMBER 2026

Australia visa guide for Ghanaian passport holders.

For a Ghanaian passport holder planning an Australian visit or registered course, compare Visitor 600 and Student 500, then follow Home Affairs online instructions. If you apply while in Ghana, biometrics depend on your own request letter.

START WITH THE PASSPORT

Which visa should you check?

Choose the visa for the real trip. A temporary visit and a course have different evidence; a Ghana residence address alone does not determine passport eligibility.

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) tourist stream is a useful first page to review for a visit. Eligibility depends on your exact circumstances. Home Affairs decides applications.

COUNTRY-SPECIFIC NOTE

What else should you know?

The Australian High Commission in Accra does not process or decide visa applications. Use ImmiAccount for lodgement and updates. If Home Affairs asks for biometrics while you are in Ghana, an eligible AUI-numbered letter may allow the Australian Immi App; otherwise follow the current Accra collection-centre instructions.

VISITING ON A GHANAIAN PASSPORT

Start with the overseas Visitor 600 Tourist stream

A Ghanaian passport is not on the current ETA 601 or eVisitor 651 passport lists. For an independent holiday or visit to family or friends, read the overseas Visitor 600 Tourist stream; meetings or conferences, work and longer study need their own activity check. The Tourist stream requires you to be outside Australia both when you apply and when Home Affairs decides it. Your current residence can change local follow-up, but it does not turn a different passport into an ETA passport.

  1. Check the live Tourist stream page, charge, conditions and document prompts for your case.
  2. Prepare accurate identity and passport information, visit purpose, realistic trip and funding details, and evidence of your circumstances where you live. Add a host invitation only if it explains a genuine visit.
  3. Lodge and pay in ImmiAccount, attach the requested evidence, and retain access to your own application. The Australian High Commission in Accra does not process or decide the application.
  4. Watch your account and email for biometrics, health or document requests and a written decision. Wait for a grant before making non-refundable travel commitments.

IF YOU APPLY WHILE IN GHANA

Read the biometrics letter before choosing app or centre

Home Affairs lists Ghana for the Australian Immi App, but the country listing by itself is not permission to use it. You need a biometrics letter with an eligible Visa Lodgement Number beginning AUI, a valid passport and a suitable phone. If your number does not begin AUI, Home Affairs says you must use an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre. Its current directory lists Accra; book according to the current centre instructions and take the travel document linked to the application. A service fee may apply.

If you cannot provide requested biometrics, the High Commission directs you to attach a written explanation in ImmiAccount. That is a request for Home Affairs to consider, not a waiver. If you live in another country, use the instructions for your actual location and your own letter.

STUDYING ON A GHANAIAN PASSPORT

Build the Student 500 list for your provider

For a registered course, verify the provider and course on CRICOS. Home Affairs generally requires a Confirmation of Enrolment for each intended course, with limited special-category alternatives in its document tool. Select your Ghanaian passport country and actual education provider in that tool, and recheck the resulting list and your ImmiAccount prompts before lodging.

Answer the Genuine Student questions in your own words and gather records that support your real circumstances, course choice and expected benefit. Provide English-language and financial-capacity evidence at lodgement if your current list calls for it. Check Overseas Student Health Cover and, where relevant, welfare and parental-consent requirements for an applicant under 18. If biometrics are requested in Ghana, the same AUI-letter versus Accra-centre distinction above applies; a biometrics appointment is not a visa grant.

TRANSLATIONS AND SAFETY

Keep documents and payments in the official channel

The Accra High Commission says to include an English translation alongside an original supporting document that is not in English. For a translation prepared outside Australia by a non-accredited translator, it asks for the translator's full name, address, telephone number, qualifications and language experience. Follow the exact visa instructions as well; missing translations can delay consideration.

The High Commission has warned about false Australian job and visa offers aimed at West African applicants. No agent or social-media contact can guarantee a grant. Keep access to ImmiAccount, verify any claimed migration agent and government charge through official sources, and do not share passport or banking records with a person promising a fast-track outcome.

DOCUMENTS TO PREPARE

Build a clear, consistent application

For a Visitor 600 application, organise the evidence below. For Student 500, use the study section above and the passport-and-provider document tool.

  • Passport and identity documents that match your application.
  • A simple account of your travel dates, purpose and accommodation.
  • Evidence that you can fund the trip, or details of a supporter.
  • Relevant work, study, family or residence evidence that explains your circumstances.
  • Invitation details if you are visiting someone.
  • Clear scans and translations where required.

Home Affairs can request additional evidence, biometrics or health checks. See its document preparation advice and our biometrics guide. For the overseas Tourist stream, use our detailed Visitor 600 evidence guide.
