COUNTRY GUIDE · UPDATED 27 SEPTEMBER 2026

Australia visa guide for Indonesian passport holders.

Indonesian passport holders planning a holiday or family visit can start with the Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist stream. A working holiday is a different route: Home Affairs expects a future first-462 ballot for Indonesian passports.

START WITH THE PASSPORT

Which visitor visa should you check?

An Indonesian passport is not on the ETA or eVisitor passport lists. Choose a Visitor 600 stream for an actual temporary visit; a visitor visa is not permission to work in Australia. Check the separate first-462 instructions for a working holiday.

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) tourist stream is a useful first page to review for a visit. Eligibility depends on your exact circumstances. Home Affairs decides applications.

COUNTRY-SPECIFIC NOTE

What else should you know?

The Australian Embassy in Indonesia says Visitor, Student and Partner visa applications must be lodged online through ImmiAccount. It advises applicants to complete every answer and attach the documents requested for their visa.

PASSPORT AND TRIP PURPOSE

Start with Visitor 600 for a temporary visit

An Indonesian passport is not on the current ETA (601) or eVisitor (651) eligible-passport lists. For an independent holiday or family visit, read the overseas Visitor 600 Tourist stream. For permitted short business visitor activities, sponsored family visits or frequent travel, compare the separate Visitor 600 streams before choosing. The visa and evidence must match what you actually intend to do.

Living in Indonesia does not make another passport eligible or ineligible for ETA or eVisitor; check the passport you will travel on. None of these visitor routes is permission to take an Australian job.

LODGING FROM INDONESIA

Use ImmiAccount and the current attachment prompts

  1. Read the official page for the Visitor 600 stream that fits your trip, including its application location, fee and conditions.
  2. Prepare accurate identity, trip-purpose, funding and personal-circumstance information. Use the Embassy's current checklist and the documents requested in your online application rather than relying on a fixed list from an old agent or blog.
  3. Lodge online through ImmiAccount. The Australian Embassy in Indonesia says Visitor, Student and Partner applications must be lodged there. Check names, passport details and answers before submitting.
  4. After lodgement, monitor ImmiAccount and email. Follow biometrics, health or further-document requests only as instructed for your own application. Read the written outcome and grant conditions before final travel arrangements.

If you intend to work, or to study for longer than a short permitted visitor activity, use the official finder for a visa that matches that purpose instead.

FREQUENT VISITS

Frequent Traveller has its own biometric requirement

Home Affairs lists Indonesian citizens among those who may check the Visitor 600 Frequent Traveller stream for repeated tourism or permitted business visitor trips. It can be granted for up to 10 years, with up to three months on each entry, but a long validity does not allow someone to live or work in Australia. This stream requires biometrics at an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre. Check the current centre locations and the instructions Home Affairs sends before assuming that it is practical for you.

The ordinary Tourist stream has different eligibility and may involve biometrics only if requested for your application. Do not treat the Frequent Traveller requirement as a universal Tourist-stream rule.

FIRST WORK AND HOLIDAY 462

Watch the planned Indonesian ballot

If the purpose is a working holiday rather than a visitor trip, check the separate first Work and Holiday 462 rules for your passport and age. Home Affairs' current country-cap table says first Indonesian 462 applications will be managed through a ballot. Registration is expected later in 2026, but no opening date has been confirmed. The China, India and Vietnam registration dates do not apply to an Indonesian passport. A ballot selection would only permit an application; it would not grant a visa.

SCAMS AND TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

Keep access to the application and the written grant

The Australian Embassy in Indonesia warns about agents who guarantee an outcome, claim a visitor visa can be used for work, or refuse to show the application in ImmiAccount. If someone assists you, check the passport, history and purpose entered on your behalf and retain the official acknowledgement and decision. Do not send identity documents or money to a person promising a “fast-track” result.

Australian visas are generally recorded electronically and linked to the passport used in the application. The Embassy says you do not need a physical visa label in that passport to travel. Keep the grant notification for its dates and conditions, check a current visa in VEVO when relevant, and check any separate transit or exit-document rules for your route.
