Which visa should you check?
Choose the visa for the real purpose and the passport you will travel on. Malaysian residence alone does not make a different passport ETA or Work and Holiday eligible. An ETA does not permit employment.
The ETA (subclass 601) may fit a short visitor trip. Eligibility depends on your exact circumstances. Home Affairs decides applications.

What else should you know?
The Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur says eligible travellers apply for an ETA in the official app and should allow at least four weeks. If an ETA needs further information, follow the email and ImmiAccount form. If Home Affairs requests biometrics for another visa while you are in Malaysia, use your letter to book at the Australian Visa Application Centre.
Apply with your Malaysian passport in the official ETA app
Home Affairs lists Malaysia as an ETA-eligible passport country. An ETA may fit tourism, a family visit or permitted business visitor activity, with stays of up to three months per entry. It does not permit employment. Use the Australian ETA app while outside Australia; a Malaysian residence card with a different passport does not create ETA eligibility.
The Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur advises applying at least four weeks before intended travel. If further processing is needed, read the email, including your junk folder, and use the linked ImmiAccount form to provide the requested information. If your purpose or stay does not fit an ETA, compare the appropriate Visitor 600 stream or another visa. Renewing your passport requires a new ETA linked to the new passport.

Check the live Malaysian application cap before preparing a first 462
A Malaysian passport holder aged 18–30 inclusive can check the first Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) for an extended holiday with short-term work. This is a different route from an ETA. Home Affairs' 2 October 2026 country-cap table listed Malaysia open against an annual first-visa grant cap of 1,100. Open status does not reserve a place or establish eligibility; the table says updates may lag by up to 48 hours. Check its live status when you plan to apply. The China, India and Vietnam ballot process is separate and is not the Malaysian path.
The first-462 page sets Malaysian education evidence at a tertiary degree, graduate diploma or graduate certificate, or at least two years of undergraduate university study. It does not treat an advanced diploma, ordinary diploma, Certificate I–IV or senior-secondary qualification as meeting that Malaysian threshold. Check the current table and your actual evidence before proceeding. It also requires functional-English evidence; a Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Good Conduct Certificate is listed as an alternative to the government-support letter. Read the exact instructions rather than assuming a generic police certificate covers every requirement.
For a first 462, apply online from outside Australia and check prior Working Holiday Maker history, funds, health, character and dependent-child requirements. A first grant normally permits a 12-month stay from first entry, with work and study conditions; the actual grant notice sets your entry deadline and conditions. Second and third 462 applications have separate specified-work rules and are not subject to the first-visa country cap.

Use Malaysia’s e-Konsular system for the stated certificate
Home Affairs lists the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Good Conduct Certificate as the alternative government-support document for a Malaysian first-462 application. Malaysia’s Ministry says its Certificate of Good Conduct application is made through the official e-Konsular system. Since 20 June 2026, the Ministry says payment is taken when the application is submitted and the certificate has an updated security format. Check the live portal for identity evidence, the current charge, how to receive the certificate and timing before paying or making a plan around the live 462 cap status.
This certificate serves the specific Home Affairs government-support requirement; a separate character or police-certificate request, if any, must be answered as Home Affairs instructs in your own application. Do not upload a certificate or identity documents to MyAusVisa.

Follow a biometrics letter through the current collection service
The High Commission says you can find a biometrics-request letter in ImmiAccount and use it to book an Australian Visa Application Centre appointment through the current VFS service. Only take this step if your own application requests biometrics. The High Commission cannot answer individual visa enquiries or decide your application. If you live outside Malaysia, follow your letter and the collection instructions for your actual location.

Build a clear, consistent application
For ETA, follow the prompts for that visa. The points below are useful preparation questions, especially if you need to consider Visitor 600; they are not a fixed attachment list for a short-visit visa. For a Working Holiday visa, use its own eligibility and evidence page.
- Passport and identity documents that match your application.
- A simple account of your travel dates, purpose and accommodation.
- Evidence that you can fund the trip, or details of a supporter.
- Relevant work, study, family or residence evidence that explains your circumstances.
- Invitation details if you are visiting someone.
- Clear scans and translations where required.
Home Affairs can request additional evidence, biometrics or health checks. See its document preparation advice and our biometrics guide.
