COUNTRY GUIDE · UPDATED 27 SEPTEMBER 2026

Australia visa guide for Papua New Guinean passport holders.

Papua New Guinean passport holders can compare Visitor 600 Tourist or Business Visitor for a short visit with the separate first Work and Holiday 462 for an extended holiday with work. The first-462 cap and evidence rules need their own check.

START WITH THE PASSPORT

Which visa should you check?

Match Visitor 600 to a genuine visit or permitted business activity; it is not work permission. A first Work and Holiday 462 has its own age, education, English, cap and previous-visa criteria. A previous Visitor 600 grant may offer a simpler repeat-application form but does not guarantee a new visa.

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) tourist stream is a useful first page to review for a visit. Eligibility depends on your exact circumstances. Home Affairs decides applications.

COUNTRY-SPECIFIC NOTE

What else should you know?

The Australian High Commission in Port Moresby directs applicants to ImmiAccount. In Papua New Guinea, it says visa applicants normally receive a biometrics letter for an appointment at the Port Moresby or Lae collection centre, unless excluded or exempt. Lae currently operates on Fridays only; check the letter, booking instructions and current hours before travelling.

PNG PASSPORT / REPEAT VISIT

Check the newer “Apply again” path in ImmiAccount

From 1 July 2026, the High Commission describes a streamlined Apply again option for eligible Papua New Guinean citizens applying for Visitor 600 in the Tourist or Business Visitor stream. It is aimed at repeat applicants with a Visitor 600 application finalised in the previous five years and a compliant history. It can pre-fill parts of an application; it is not a visa renewal or a guarantee of a grant.

Open the last finalised Visitor 600 application in ImmiAccount and check whether Apply again appears. The official instructions say the system assesses eligibility and either opens the streamlined form or directs you to start a new Visitor 600 application. If an earlier application is in a different ImmiAccount, follow Home Affairs' import instructions first. Choose Tourist for a genuine holiday or family visit; Business Visitor covers permitted meetings and similar activities, not taking a job.

PNG / CHARGE AND BIOMETRICS

Check the current fee and your letter

Home Affairs lists Papua New Guinea among the passport countries eligible for a lower Visitor visa application charge from 1 July 2026. The charge is recognised from the valid passport used in the application. Check the amount shown in ImmiAccount or the official fee estimator before paying; residence in PNG with another passport does not itself create this concession.

If applying while in PNG, the High Commission says the biometrics request normally directs applicants to a collection centre in Port Moresby or Lae, unless excluded or exempt. Book only after checking your own letter and the current VFS instructions. Lae's published service is Friday only; confirm the time and location again before travelling. Older mission PDFs and fact sheets still appear in searches, so follow this current High Commission page and your live application instead.

PNG PASSPORT / FIRST WORK AND HOLIDAY 462

Check the 100-place cap before planning work

Education source difference checked 29 September 2026: the Home Affairs web table groups this passport under a tertiary qualification or two undergraduate years, while Schedule 1 of current LIN 26/072 specifies at least two successfully completed years of undergraduate university study. Do not assume a shorter qualification meets the requirement. Clarify the evidence for your qualification with Home Affairs or the relevant Australian mission before lodging; this guide does not decide equivalence or eligibility.

Current instrument: section 9 and Schedule 1 · Compare the Home Affairs education table

A Papua New Guinean citizen with a valid PNG passport can check the first Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) for an extended holiday with short-term work. This is separate from Visitor 600, which does not allow taking a job. Home Affairs' cap table listed PNG open against 100 annual first-visa grants on 14 October 2026. Open status does not reserve a place or establish eligibility. The published status can lag a change by up to 48 hours. Check it before attempting to lodge; the China, India and Vietnam ballot is not the PNG route.

The first-462 age range is 18–30 inclusive at application under the Australian Eastern time deadline. Home Affairs groups PNG with passport countries requiring a tertiary degree, graduate certificate or diploma, or two completed years of undergraduate university study. It also requires Functional English evidence. Home Affairs lists PNG among the countries that do not need a government-support letter. From 1 July 2026, an eligible PNG passport holder may receive the lower first-462 application charge; check the current amount in ImmiAccount rather than applying a Visitor 600 fee to this visa.

Apply online while outside Australia and remain outside for the decision. Check prior 417 or 462 entry, funds for the stay and departure, health, character and dependent-child rules. If granted, read the first-entry deadline, stay and work conditions in your own notice. For biometrics in PNG, follow any request letter and the current Port Moresby or Lae service instructions.
