COUNTRY GUIDE · UPDATED 28 SEPTEMBER 2026

Australia visa guide for South African passport holders.

Plan a temporary visit, Australian course or onward connection with a South African passport. Compare Visitor 600, Student 500 and the conditional transit rule, then follow local requests for the country where you actually live.

START WITH THE PASSPORT

Which visa should you check?

A South African passport is not on the ETA or eVisitor passport lists. For a temporary visit, compare the appropriate Visitor 600 streams; a visitor visa does not permit work in Australia. Your residence can affect local biometrics and other follow-up.

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) tourist stream is a useful first page to review for a visit. Eligibility depends on your exact circumstances. Home Affairs decides applications.

COUNTRY-SPECIFIC NOTE

What else should you know?

For applicants in South Africa, the Australian High Commission in Pretoria directs visa lodgement and updates to ImmiAccount. Staff at the High Commission cannot assist with individual visa enquiries.

STUDY IN AUSTRALIA

A South African passport is not an English-test exemption by itself

For Student 500, choose South Africa and your actual education provider in the Home Affairs document tool. Check the CRICOS course, CoE, Genuine Student answers, funds, OSHC and any under-18 welfare evidence. Recheck the tool before submitting, including its usual 30 September update; an earlier saved list may change.

The current passport-based English-test exemption lists UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Republic of Ireland citizenship and passports. South Africa is not in that passport list. A separate exemption covers completing at least five years of study in English in Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa or Republic of Ireland. The distinction is your actual study history, not simply speaking English or holding a South African passport. If relying on an exemption, attach evidence that demonstrates it. Home Affairs may ask for English evidence during processing even when the initial tool did not require it.

An education provider's admission requirements are a separate check. Use the current visa test-date and score tables if you need a test, rather than assuming every course accepts the same score.

ONWARD CONNECTIONS

South Africa is on the TWOV list, with strict conditions

The current Transit Without a Visa list includes South African citizens. You must also arrive by air, have a confirmed flight to a third country within eight hours, have documents valid for entry there, and remain in the airport transit lounge without clearing immigration. A listed nationality alone is insufficient.

Collecting baggage, a new check-in, terminal arrangements or changing airports may require immigration clearance. Confirm the exact transfer with your airline. If you cannot meet every TWOV condition, check Transit 771 or another appropriate visa before travelling. The published TWOV information is not applicable to stateless persons or refugees.

CHOOSING AND LODGING

Start with the overseas Tourist stream

A South African passport is not on the current ETA (601) or eVisitor (651) passport lists. For an independent holiday or family visit, read the overseas Visitor 600 Tourist stream. If you will visit for business activities, be formally sponsored by family, work or study, compare the visa and stream for that purpose before applying. Residence in South Africa does not make a different passport ETA or eVisitor eligible.

  1. Check the current Tourist stream eligibility, conditions, charge and processing estimate on Home Affairs.
  2. Prepare accurate identity, visit, funding and personal-circumstance information. Attach the documents requested for your application at lodgement; the Pretoria High Commission warns that a decision may be made without asking for more.
  3. Complete and pay for the application in ImmiAccount. Keep access to it, even if someone helps you, and check its messages for any later request or written decision.

SOUTH AFRICA FOLLOW-UP

Check the biometrics request and your AUI number

The High Commission says applicants may be asked for a facial image and fingerprints. If you receive a biometrics request while in South Africa, read the deadline and visa lodgement number in your own letter. Home Affairs lists South Africa for the Australian Immi App when an eligible letter has a number beginning AUI. If your number does not begin AUI, follow the letter and current collection-centre instructions instead. Providing biometrics is not a visa decision.

For an application lodged in ImmiAccount, the High Commission says to attach a written statement there if you cannot provide requested biometrics. For an ETA app application, follow the app and your individual request. Do not assume an explanation waives the requirement. Application-channel note checked 6 October 2026. If you live outside South Africa, use the service instructions for where you are, even if you hold a South African passport.

ADDRESS AND TRANSLATIONS

Give a usable residential address

The Pretoria High Commission says an application needs a complete residential address, or a description that leads to your home if there is no official street address. Its examples include a title deed with location details, clear directions, or GPS coordinates with a description. A P.O. box alone is not acceptable. Enter the address where you actually live and use the official page's examples if your home has no formal number or street.

Attach the original and an English translation for supporting documents in another language, following Home Affairs' endorsement rules. Check that translations, names and dates match the application before you lodge.

URGENT TRAVEL AND SCAMS

Use the documented compassionate-travel process

The Pretoria High Commission says severe illness or death in the family can be grounds to consider urgent priority, with no guarantee. Its process starts with a complete ImmiAccount application and any requested biometrics or health checks, followed by the official immigration enquiry form selecting Pretoria and documentary evidence. Already booked flights, financial loss, wedding guest travel and birthdays generally do not qualify. Read the current instructions before asking for priority.

Be cautious of anyone promising a guaranteed or fast-tracked visa. The High Commission says only Home Affairs decides visas. Pay the government charge through the official channel, retain your own ImmiAccount access, and check any Australian migration agent on the official register.
