Which visa should you check?
Check the actual passport type and travel purpose. An ETA is for permitted visits, not taking a job; first Working Holiday 417 has separate age, previous-visa and outside-Australia rules. Taiwan residence with another passport does not make that passport eligible.
The ETA (subclass 601) may fit a short visitor trip. Eligibility depends on your exact circumstances. Home Affairs decides applications.

What else should you know?
The Australian Office Taipei says an eligible ordinary Taiwan passport holder uses the official Australian ETA app for an ETA; other online visas can use ImmiAccount as directed. Taiwan has no Australian biometrics collection facility. If Home Affairs asks for biometrics while you are in Taiwan, follow the request deadline; for an application lodged in ImmiAccount, upload a statement and evidence of your location there. An assessing officer considers the evidence.
Check ETA 601 against the exact passport type
Home Affairs lists Taiwan passports other than official or diplomatic passports for the Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601). The Australian Office Taipei describes the route for ordinary Taiwan passport holders visiting for tourism, family or permitted business visitor activities. An ETA allows up to three months per entry, is requested in the official Australian ETA app from outside Australia and does not permit employment. Taiwan is not on Home Affairs' eVisitor 651 passport list.
If you hold an official, diplomatic or other travel document, or your main purpose is work or a longer course, use the official visa finder for your own document and purpose. A Taiwan residence card with a different passport does not create ETA eligibility. If you get a new passport, Home Affairs says an ETA linked to the old passport ceases and a new ETA application is needed.

An extended holiday with work has a separate visa
Home Affairs lists Taiwan for a first Working Holiday visa (subclass 417), except an official or diplomatic passport. It requires the applicant to be a citizen with the eligible valid passport and to be 18–30 inclusive when applying. The application deadline follows Australian Eastern time, so check the exact date before your 31st birthday rather than relying on your local midnight. A Taiwan passport alone does not bypass the other first-visa requirements.
Apply online while outside Australia and remain outside for the decision. Check prior 417 or 462 entry, funds, health, character and dependent-child criteria on the current page. The first 12-month stay starts when you first enter Australia on the granted visa, even if you also hold an ETA; do not obtain another short-visit visa to try to delay that start. Read the entry deadline, work and study conditions in your own grant. A second or third 417 has different specified-work rules.

What if Home Affairs requests biometrics?
The Australian Office Taipei says Taiwan is not currently part of Australia's biometrics collection program and has no Australian biometrics collection facility. If Home Affairs nevertheless requests collection while you are there, the Office tells applicants to upload a statement and evidence of their Taiwan location, such as a residence card or passport stamps, to their online application within the timeframe in the request. An assessing officer then considers that information. This is not an automatic waiver. For an application lodged in ImmiAccount, use its document-upload instructions; for an ETA, follow the channel and any form link in your individual further-processing letter.
The Office cannot decide a visa or give individual visa advice. If you are in another country when requested, follow the instructions for that location and your own letter. If you move during an application, update Home Affairs through the official channel.

Build a clear, consistent application
For ETA, follow the prompts for that visa. The points below are useful preparation questions, especially if you need to consider Visitor 600; they are not a fixed attachment list for a short-visit visa. For a Working Holiday visa, use its own eligibility and evidence page.
- Passport and identity documents that match your application.
- A simple account of your travel dates, purpose and accommodation.
- Evidence that you can fund the trip, or details of a supporter.
- Relevant work, study, family or residence evidence that explains your circumstances.
- Invitation details if you are visiting someone.
- Clear scans and translations where required.
Home Affairs can request additional evidence, biometrics or health checks. See its document preparation advice and our biometrics guide.
