COUNTRY GUIDE · UPDATED 27 SEPTEMBER 2026

Australia visa guide for Thai passport holders.

Thai passport holders can compare Visitor 600 Tourist or Frequent Traveller for visits with the separate first Work and Holiday 462 for an extended holiday with work. The 462 route has Thai-specific education and government-support steps.

START WITH THE PASSPORT

Which visa should you check?

Choose the stream for your actual purpose. Visitor 600 does not permit employment. For a first 462, check the live Thailand cap, age, tertiary qualification, Functional English and required Department of Children and Youth letter. Living in Thailand with another passport does not create Thai passport eligibility.

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) tourist stream is a useful first page to review for a visit. Eligibility depends on your exact circumstances. Home Affairs decides applications.

COUNTRY-SPECIFIC NOTE

What else should you know?

The Australian Embassy in Bangkok directs applicants to lodge through ImmiAccount, attach supporting documents when applying and include English translations with originals. Applicants in Thailand should watch for a biometrics request after lodgement and follow the instructions in their own letter.

THAI PASSPORT / VISIT

Tourist stream or Frequent Traveller stream?

For a temporary holiday or family visit, begin with the overseas Visitor 600 Tourist stream and check its current eligibility, cost and conditions. Home Affairs separately lists Thai citizens among those who may apply for the Visitor 600 Frequent Traveller stream if they travel often for tourism or permitted business visitor activities. Compare the streams on the official pages before selecting one; the longer-validity option has its own requirements and does not permit work or residence in Australia.

Your passport and purpose guide this choice. Someone living in Thailand on a different passport must check that passport's eligibility. Someone with a Thai passport living elsewhere should use follow-up services for their actual residence. If your main purpose is ongoing employment, a longer course or migration, use the official visa finder rather than treating a visitor or working-holiday visa as a general work permit.

APPLYING FROM THAILAND

Prepare documents before lodging in ImmiAccount

  1. Read the current page for your chosen stream. Prepare accurate passport and identity details, your visit plans, funding and evidence of your circumstances where you live. Use the document prompts in your own application.
  2. For Thai or other non-English records, attach the original and an English translation. The Australian Embassy says the translator should endorse the translation with their full name, address, telephone number and qualifications.
  3. Lodge online through ImmiAccount with the required supporting documents. The Embassy says it cannot give general visa advice or a decision at its counter; use Home Affairs and your account to track the application.
  4. Watch your account and email for any biometrics, health or further-document request. Read the written visa outcome and its conditions before finalising travel.

For an overseas Tourist application, Home Affairs requires you to be outside Australia when you apply and when it decides the application. The Embassy recommends applying well before travel and avoiding final travel commitments until a valid visa is granted.

BIOMETRICS IN THAILAND

Read the letter before choosing the app or a centre

The Embassy says applicants in Thailand are notified of a biometrics requirement after lodgement. Home Affairs now lists Thailand for the Australian Immi App, but its app is available only to eligible applicants whose biometrics letter has a Visa Lodgement Number beginning AUI. If your number does not begin AUI, follow the letter and attend an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre. Check the current overseas-services directory for collection locations and booking instructions.

The Embassy's general FAQ still describes an in-person appointment for applicants in Thailand. The current Home Affairs AUI rule determines whether the app is available for your request. Home Affairs currently requires Frequent Traveller applicants to provide biometrics at an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre; do not assume the Tourist stream AUI app option applies to that separate stream. Read the live stream page and your own letter. A biometrics request is a step in assessment, not a visa grant.

CHECK BEFORE TRAVEL

What if your passport or plans change?

Keep the passport details in your application accurate and update Home Affairs if they change. If granted, read the grant notice for the travel validity, permitted stay, entries and conditions. Use VEVO if you need to check your current visa details. If your circumstances change while the application is pending, use ImmiAccount rather than relying on an agent's verbal update.

THAI PASSPORT / FIRST WORK AND HOLIDAY 462

Check the Thai support letter and live cap

For an extended holiday with short-term work, a Thai citizen with a valid Thai passport can check the first Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462). Home Affairs' 2 October 2026 cap table listed Thailand open against 2,000 annual first-visa grants. Open status does not reserve a place or establish eligibility; the table can lag a status change by up to 48 hours. Read the live status before planning an application. Thailand does not use the China, India and Vietnam first-462 ballot.

The first-462 age range is 18–30 inclusive when applying, using the Australian Eastern time birthday deadline. Home Affairs' Thailand education row requires a tertiary qualification from a university, college or training centre; it lists a degree, graduate certificate or diploma and does not present two years of undergraduate study as an alternative for Thailand. Functional English evidence is separate. Home Affairs also requires a letter of support from Thailand's Department of Children and Youth before lodging. Check that agency's current process; older intake notices do not set the current application window. A Thai passport alone does not waive education or English requirements.

Apply online from outside Australia and remain outside for the decision. Check any previous 417 or 462 entry, funds, health, character and dependent-child rules. A later biometrics request in Thailand may use the Australian Immi App only if your letter has an eligible AUI number; otherwise follow centre instructions. The separate Visitor 600 Frequent Traveller centre-only biometrics rule should not be copied to every 462 application. Read the written grant and conditions before booking work or travel.
