COUNTRY GUIDE · UPDATED 27 SEPTEMBER 2026

Australia visa guide for Vietnamese passport holders.

Vietnamese passport holders planning a short visit can start with Visitor 600 Tourist. For an extended holiday with short-term work, check the separate first Work and Holiday 462 ballot. Apply through the correct official channel and follow biometrics instructions for where you live.

START WITH THE PASSPORT

Which visa should you check?

A Vietnamese passport is not on the ETA or eVisitor lists. A visitor visa does not permit employment; first Work and Holiday 462 applicants need ballot selection before they can lodge. Residence in Vietnam does not determine eligibility for another passport.

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) tourist stream is a useful first page to review for a visit. Eligibility depends on your exact circumstances. Home Affairs decides applications.

COUNTRY-SPECIFIC NOTE

What else should you know?

The Australian Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City directs visa applicants to ImmiAccount. It says applicants in Vietnam are normally notified of a biometrics requirement after lodgement; check your own request and current collection-centre details.

PASSPORT AND PURPOSE

Choose the Visitor 600 stream for your trip

A Vietnamese passport is not on the current ETA (601) or eVisitor (651) passport lists. For an independent holiday or family visit, begin with the overseas Visitor 600 Tourist stream. Permitted short business visitor activities have a different stream. Work or longer study needs a visa that fits that purpose; an Australian visitor visa is not permission to take a job.

Each family member needs their own visa application. Living in Vietnam does not change ETA or eVisitor passport eligibility for a traveller with another passport. Check the exact passport used for travel and the current Home Affairs rules before lodging.

APPLYING FROM VIETNAM

Lodge online, then follow the biometrics letter

  1. Read the current visa page and gather evidence that explains your visit, funds and circumstances. Check each person's name and passport details.
  2. Lodge each application and attach its documents through ImmiAccount. The Australian Consulate-General says not to send hard copies unless requested.
  3. After lodgement, read the biometrics request in your own account. The Consulate-General says applicants resident in Vietnam are generally required to provide biometrics, with limited exemptions. Its FAQ lists appointment-based centres in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City; check the current directory before booking.
  4. Respond to any further health or document request, then read the written visa decision and conditions. Do not treat biometrics collection as approval or finalise non-refundable travel before a grant.

If you live outside Vietnam, follow the local process where you reside rather than assuming the Vietnam collection instructions apply to you.

DOCUMENTS AND CHILDREN

Translate evidence and check parental consent

The Consulate-General asks applicants to attach supporting documents when lodging. For documents not in English, include the original and an English translation endorsed with the translator's name, address, telephone number and qualifications. Use the current online checklist for your application; a bank statement or invitation alone does not establish eligibility.

For a child under 18, check the official consent rules early. When a parent or person with parental responsibility is not accompanying the child, the Consulate-General describes a signed consent form and identity evidence, unless sole legal responsibility is established. It says consent signed in Vietnam must be certified by a local People's Committee or notary office. Read the current instructions for your family's circumstances rather than assuming every child needs the same document.

PROTECT YOUR APPLICATION

Keep your ImmiAccount application visible

The Australian mission in Vietnam warns against agents who guarantee a visa, claim a visitor visa permits work, charge for a supposed fast track or refuse to show applicants what was entered in ImmiAccount. Check the answers and documents submitted in your name, including identity, travel and relationship history. If you pay for migration advice, verify the person's Australian registration or legal authority before relying on them.

VIETNAMESE PASSPORT / FIRST WORK AND HOLIDAY 462

A working holiday uses a ballot, not a visitor visa

A Vietnamese passport holder aged 18–30 inclusive can check the first Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) for an extended holiday with short-term work. The Visitor 600 Tourist stream above does not allow that work. Home Affairs requires eligible Vietnamese passport holders to register in a pre-application ballot and be randomly selected before they can lodge a first-462 application. Selection permits an application; it does not decide the visa.

The 2026–27 registration period closed on 25 June 2026. Existing registrants can watch ImmiAccount and their registered email for a selection notice; selections may continue until 30 April 2027. If selected, follow the notice and lodge the first-462 application within 28 calendar days. The notice gives the exact due date; turning 31 sooner can create an earlier age deadline. Home Affairs requires the applicant to be outside Australia both when applying and when it decides the application. A person who did not register this program year should follow the official ballot page for a future registration announcement rather than paying someone who claims to secure a selection.

Check the current education and functional-English evidence, sufficient funds, health, character and prior Working Holiday Maker history on the first-462 page. The ballot requires a valid 12-digit Vietnamese national ID card, not an old 9-digit card, and the visa application requires copies of both sides with details matching the registration. Home Affairs does not list a government-support letter for Vietnamese passport holders. Translate non-English evidence under the visa page’s document rules, and follow any biometrics letter for your actual country of residence. Keep your own application access and read the grant, including first-entry timing and work conditions, before booking travel.

BALLOT UPDATE · CHECKED 30 SEPTEMBER 2026

Home Affairs lists a 29 September Vietnam selection round

The current 2026–27 ballot table lists a second random-selection date for Vietnam of 29 September 2026. This is a round date, not a notice that every registration was selected. If you already registered, check your registered email and your own ImmiAccount status. Home Affairs says a selected person receives a notification with their personal application deadline; the 28-calendar-day period runs from that notice and the age cut-off may be sooner. Future selection dates remain to be announced, and the registration period is closed.

DOCUMENTS TO PREPARE

Build a clear, consistent application

The questions below are for a Visitor 600 application. For a first Work and Holiday 462, use the separate ballot and visa evidence instructions above; an invitation or visitor-trip plan does not replace 462 eligibility.

  • Passport and identity documents that match your application.
  • A simple account of your travel dates, purpose and accommodation.
  • Evidence that you can fund the trip, or details of a supporter.
  • Relevant work, study, family or residence evidence that explains your circumstances.
  • Invitation details if you are visiting someone.
  • Clear scans and translations where required.

Home Affairs can request additional evidence, biometrics or health checks. See its document preparation advice and our biometrics guide. For the overseas Tourist stream, use our detailed Visitor 600 evidence guide.
