Check the passport you will present at the border
Home Affairs says New Zealand citizens with a valid New Zealand passport do not normally apply for a visa before coming to Australia. At entry, an eligible traveller can be granted a Special Category visa (SCV), subclass 444. It is a temporary visa that permits visiting, working and studying. The decision depends on the entry requirements, including health and character; holding a New Zealand passport does not guarantee a grant.
A person living in New Zealand on a different passport must check that passport's Australian visa options. If you became a New Zealand citizen after entering Australia or entered on another passport or temporary visa, Home Affairs describes a separate online SCV application process from inside Australia. For a child born in Australia, check citizenship first using the newborn section below. Check your existing visa in VEVO first.

Check character concerns before you travel
For an SCV at the border, Home Affairs asks for a valid New Zealand passport and an Incoming Passenger Card, or the corresponding SmartGate questions. The SCV page explains behaviour and health concern rules. If you have any kind of criminal record, use Home Affairs' dedicated New Zealand passport-holder enquiry form well before travel to ask whether a different visa process may be needed. Its pre-travel reply is guidance; an Australian Border Force officer makes the SCV decision at entry.
Answer questions truthfully and keep the records needed for your own case. Do not assume that a past entry, an airline boarding decision or a relative's SCV determines your eligibility.

An SCV can support a long stay, but it ends when you leave
Home Affairs lists no fixed end date for an SCV while you remain eligible and in Australia. It says the visa normally ceases when you depart; a later return requires a new SCV grant if you still meet the requirements. You cannot travel back on the old SCV. After entry, use your grant details and VEVO to check what visa you hold.
Already an Australian permanent visa holder? Check that visa's travel facility before leaving and tell the border officer you intend to enter as a permanent visa holder rather than receive an SCV. Home Affairs warns that an unwanted SCV grant may affect permanent-visa and Resident Return visa arrangements. This is a different question from whether an SCV holder may later apply for citizenship.

Check each family member's citizenship and visa
A New Zealand citizen family member with their own valid New Zealand passport may also be eligible for an SCV. A partner or child who is not a New Zealand citizen does not receive an SCV through yours. Home Affairs says some non-New Zealand family members of an SCV holder may be eligible for the New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship (temporary) visa, subclass 461; the exact family and sponsor circumstances matter. Check that person's visa before booking travel.
Family sponsorship for a permanent visa has a separate meaning: Home Affairs limits it to a permanent visa holder, an eligible New Zealand citizen or an Australian citizen. Merely holding an ordinary temporary SCV does not establish every permanent sponsorship right.

Is your Special Category visa protected?
Protected is a status under social security law for certain New Zealand citizen SCV holders. It is not a second visa subclass and is not decided simply by today's passport or VEVO grant date. Home Affairs lists people who held an SCV in Australia on 26 February 2001; people with at least 365 days in Australia between 26 February 1999 and 25 February 2001 who returned after 26 February 2001; and certain other cases under section 7 of the Social Security Act. For those other cases it asks for written Centrelink confirmation. Services Australia gives an overview and can assess payment eligibility; do not self-certify protected status from a date alone.
Why check? Home Affairs says an eligible New Zealand citizen (a protected SCV holder under the cited rule) can sponsor qualifying family for an Australian permanent visa without first obtaining a permanent visa. A non-protected SCV holder's non-New Zealand family may instead need to check the separate temporary subclass 461 route. Services Australia says protected status can affect access to Centrelink payments and concession cards if you live in Australia; each payment has its own requirements. These are separate questions from your SCV's work and study rights.
Citizenship is a different test. Since 1 July 2023, protected and non-protected SCV holders can apply directly for citizenship by conferral if they meet its requirements. Non-protected status alone does not bar that pathway, and the direct pathway does not turn an SCV into a permanent visa for every purpose.

The direct citizenship pathway still has requirements
Since 1 July 2023, an SCV holder can apply directly for Australian citizenship by conferral without first obtaining a separate permanent visa. Home Affairs treats an SCV holder as a permanent resident for citizenship purposes; the SCV itself remains a temporary visa for other purposes. A citizenship grant is not automatic after arrival or after four years.
For a typical adult application, the official page sets a general residence requirement of four years lawfully in Australia immediately before applying, including the last 12 months on an SCV or permanent visa, plus absence limits, character and other criteria. Special age and other circumstances have separate instructions. Check the official residence calculator and your own movement and visa history before applying.

Check citizenship before arranging a baby’s SCV
The current SCV instructions say a child born in Australia to an SCV-holding parent on or after 1 July 2022 may have acquired Australian citizenship at birth. The evidence-of-citizenship page lists this and earlier New Zealand-parent exceptions. Do not assume that every Australian-born New Zealand citizen child needs the same SCV process; use the birth date and the parent’s status at birth.

Residence is separate from citizenship and lodgement
A New Zealand residence visa does not make another passport eligible for Special Category 444, ETA or eVisitor. Choose your actual passport nationality and New Zealand as residence in our planner, then read the selected Australian visa's official instructions.
The High Commission's current contact page says Wellington does not accept visa applications. It directs visa enquiries to Home Affairs and lists the Suva office as servicing clients in New Zealand. Its visa-information page points to the official application channels, ImmiAccount and online help. Follow the channel for your visa and any personal request; a consular appointment is not an Australian visa application.
