TRAINING 407 · PREPARATION CHECKED 9 OCTOBER 2026

Training visa 407: prepare the programme and application.

Confirm the proposed training category and approvals, then organise the applicant and document checks. This guide helps you prepare questions and evidence; it is not a complete eligibility assessment. Your current visa circumstances, official instructions and approved nomination remain essential.

OCCUPATIONAL TRAINING · SOURCE CHECKED 9 OCTOBER 2026

Is the trip workplace training rather than an ordinary job?

Home Affairs lists Training 407 for workplace-based occupational training or professional development. It is not for ongoing work in Australia. It requires sponsorship and nomination, with different arrangements when the sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency.

Check the order before applying: the current official steps require approved temporary-activities sponsorship and an approved training nomination before the visa application. A Commonwealth Government agency does not have to nominate; check its invitation requirements instead. A pending sponsorship or nomination is not the required approval.

Which training category is proposed?

Proposed categoryAsk the training organisation
Occupational registrationWhich registration, membership or licence requires this training to work in the occupation in Australia or your home country? Record the authority and required training.
Improve skills in an eligible occupationWhich eligible occupation, six-digit ANZSCO code and tailored training programme are proposed? Check that the proposed duties correspond to the occupation in the current 407 instrument, including any qualification or exclusion; a matching job title alone does not establish this. Home Affairs specifies suitable previous employment or study equivalent to at least 12 months full time in that occupation during the 24 months before nomination lodgement. Check the evidence for this category rather than applying that test to every 407 applicant.
Capacity building overseasWhich branch fits: overseas qualification, government support or professional development? Ask which institution, government agency or overseas employer supports the programme, and read that branch's requirements.

The categories have different nomination requirements. Ask the organisation to identify the proposed category and read its current official requirements; these names alone do not establish eligibility.

Who will actually provide the training?

Ask the organisation to name the sponsor, the training provider and where the programme will take place. If someone other than the sponsor will deliver it, ask which approved arrangement permits this and who supplies the supporting evidence. A provider name or an invitation alone does not establish an approved nomination.

The nomination rules address direct sponsor provision and specified alternative arrangements. The related instrument is about those arrangements; it is not a complete list of organisations that can sponsor a 407 applicant. Official training-provider arrangement instrument

Check the applicant requirements before preparing documents

An approved training arrangement does not by itself establish visa eligibility. The current 407 eligibility page also covers age (usually at least 18 when the decision is made), functional English, genuine temporary intent, health, character, adequate health cover and other requirements. Check each applicable requirement for you and any family members included.

Applying while in Australia: the official page has specific current-visa and application-location requirements, including exclusions and limited exceptions. Check your exact current visa and conditions before relying on an onshore application. Being physically in Australia, having a course or job offer, or holding a bridging visa does not by itself show that this application is available to you.

Record any earlier refusal or cancellation, relevant government debt and current visa conditions for the official checks or qualified immigration assistance. This starting comparison cannot decide eligibility or calculate an exception deadline for you.

Prepare the evidence before opening the visa application

Use the current 407 Step by step document list for your circumstances. Keep your evidence privately; MyAusVisa does not receive these documents.

  • Sponsor evidence: sponsor approval letter, nomination approval letter where required, and a written sponsor statement about meeting obligations for you and included dependent family members. For a Commonwealth Government agency sponsor, include its training invitation.
  • Personal preparation: passport identity pages, applicable identity/name-change documents, evidence of funds for you and your family, adequate health insurance for the stay, and functional-English evidence under the current official rules.
  • Activity evidence: workplace training requires qualifications and a CV, plus registrations or licences if needed. Professional development also requires the sponsor's programme/skills statement and a signed letter on company letterhead from your current manager describing your position and duties.
  • Other circumstances: follow the character and accompanying-family document sections, including any applicable consent and dependency evidence. Their requirements cannot be replaced by the activity documents above.

Translate non-English documents into English. The official 407 steps specify NAATI accreditation for translators in Australia; overseas translations must include the translator's name, address, telephone number, qualifications and relevant language experience in English. Scan or photograph both English and non-English documents clearly in colour, with each multi-page document saved as one file.

Check English evidence before booking a test

Functional English can be shown through specified citizenship/passport evidence, qualifying English-medium education, or an approved test result. Check the exact conditions for the evidence you intend to use; studying in English does not automatically satisfy every listed study-duration rule.

If using a test, match its name, version, date and validity to the current functional-English table and 407 instructions. Home Affairs does not accept completely online or at-home tests. Its TOEFL iBT instructions require choosing “Taking TOEFL for Australia” during registration. Check any retake acceptance against the relevant visa page before relying on it.

Submit and keep track in ImmiAccount

The visa application is online in ImmiAccount. Attach the required evidence, including sponsor documents, and pay the application charge; Home Affairs says processing does not begin until the charge is paid. Keep a copy of the completed application.

After submission, check ImmiAccount for requests and attach missing evidence as soon as possible. Home Affairs tells you if health examinations or biometrics are needed. Use the written visa outcome to check the grant dates and conditions before travelling or starting the arrangement. Track requests and processing → · If an answer needs correcting →

After a grant: check your own conditions

Read the written grant and check VEVO for your expiry date, permitted work or training, travel rights and any conditions applying to accompanying family members. The official 407 condition directory lists conditions that might be attached; it is not a list that automatically applies to every holder.

Time outside Australia does not extend this visa. Before returning, check that your visa and travel document remain valid. Home Affairs says a longer stay requires a new visa rather than extending the existing 407; check eligibility and your current conditions before relying on another application.

Keep Home Affairs informed of relevant changes, including passport/contact details, relationship status or a birth. If pay, conditions or promised training are a problem, use the official migrant-worker protection information.

Already training and considering a change?

A change of training programme can require a new nomination and visa application. Before switching, record whether the sponsor or approved programme is changing, what approvals are needed and what your current grant permits. Follow the official sponsor/programme-change instructions before starting the new arrangement.

Ask the training organisation which training category fits the program, what has been approved and which official evidence you need. Read the full eligibility and location instructions before lodging. A course enrolment or job offer alone does not establish this route.
