APPLYING WHILE IN QATAR · REVIEWED 27 SEPTEMBER 2026

Applying for an Australian visa from Qatar.

Your travel passport and trip purpose determine the Australian visa route. Living in Qatar affects where you prepare your application and may affect biometrics, but a Qatar residence card does not change which passports qualify for an ETA or eVisitor.

01 / PASSPORT FIRST

Choose a visa using the passport you will travel on

A Qatari passport is not on the current eligible-passport lists for the ETA (subclass 601) or eVisitor (subclass 651). For a temporary holiday or family visit from outside Australia, start with the Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist stream and check its full conditions. If you are a resident of Qatar with a different passport, check that passport against the official ETA and eVisitor lists; Qatar residence alone does not grant or remove short-visit eligibility.

An ETA uses the official Australian ETA app, while an eVisitor is an online application. The Visitor 600 Tourist application uses ImmiAccount. Each route has its own permitted purpose, stay and application rules. If you intend to work, study for a longer period or join family, select a route for that purpose.

02 / TOURIST APPLICATION

Apply online and show your real Qatar circumstances

The Australian Embassy in Doha does not handle visa applications or general visa enquiries. Home Affairs says most visa applications can be lodged through ImmiAccount. For the overseas Tourist stream, you must be outside Australia when you apply and when Home Affairs decides. Read the current visa page and use the attachment prompts in your own application.

Prepare the passport identity page, a truthful visit plan, funds for the stay and departure, and reasons to return to your home country or usual country of residence. If Qatar is where you usually live, a genuine residence permission and relevant work, study or family records can help explain what you will resume there. A Qatar ID card alone does not guarantee an Australian visa or a right to return to Qatar after travel.

03 / BIOMETRICS IN QATAR

Read your request letter before choosing an app or centre

Home Affairs will tell you if your application needs biometrics. Qatar is on the Australian Immi App availability list, but that does not make every applicant eligible to use it. If your biometrics letter has a Visa Lodgement Number beginning AUI and you meet the app requirements, follow the official instructions for scanning your passport and submitting a live image.

If your number does not begin AUI, Home Affairs says to attend an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre. Its current centre list includes Doha; follow the letter and the official booking instructions for the current address, appointment and service charge. Take the travel document linked to your visa application. A completed biometric check is not a visa grant.

04 / STUDY, WORK OR FAMILY

Match the application to your actual purpose

For longer study, check the Student visa (subclass 500), a registered course, Confirmation of Enrolment, Overseas Student Health Cover and the current document checklist for your passport country and education provider. Applying from Qatar does not replace those visa-specific requirements.

For Australian employment, use the work visa finder and check any employer, occupation or nomination conditions. For a temporary family visit, compare the Tourist and Sponsored Family visitor streams; joining a partner or family member to live in Australia is a different route. A Visitor visa does not allow ordinary work.

05 / AFTER LODGEMENT

Follow the channel for your actual visa application

For a visa lodged in ImmiAccount, check that application for requests for documents, biometrics or health examinations. If asked for a health check, use the HAP ID and approved panel physician instructions from Home Affairs, not a clinic chosen only by proximity. Update passport or contact details through the official route if they change. Check the live fee and processing-time tools for the exact visa and stream; neither a receipt nor a published estimate guarantees a grant date.

For an ETA submitted through the Australian ETA app, check your email, including junk mail, for the written notification. If Home Affairs needs more information, follow the link in your individual letter to the specific online form in ImmiAccount and provide the answers and attachments it requests, including Form 1554 where directed. Do not assume an ordinary ImmiAccount application has been created, and do not submit repeated ETA app applications to try to bypass further processing.

Read the grant notice for travel validity, permitted stay, entries and conditions before you commit to travel. If you cannot find the correct official process, the Doha embassy directs visa enquiries to Home Affairs rather than its consular desk.
