COUNTRY GUIDE · UPDATED 27 SEPTEMBER 2026

Australia visa guide for Brazilian passport holders.

For a Brazilian passport holder, a short Australian visit and an extended working holiday follow different routes. Compare Visitor 600 with the first Work and Holiday 462, including Brazil’s education rule and current country cap.

START WITH THE PASSPORT

Which visa should you check?

A Brazilian passport is not on the current ETA or eVisitor lists. Visitor 600 Tourist is a starting point for a temporary holiday or family visit; first Work and Holiday 462 is a separate route for an extended holiday with short-term work. Your residence affects local follow-up, not the passport list.

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) tourist stream is a useful first page to review for a visit. Eligibility depends on your exact circumstances. Home Affairs decides applications.

COUNTRY-SPECIFIC NOTE

What else should you know?

If you apply while in Brazil, the Australian Embassy says most visa applications use ImmiAccount and applicants in Brazil currently do not provide biometrics at lodgement. Follow any later Home Affairs request. Its current page also explains which Portuguese documents need English translations and when a Brazilian sworn translator is needed.

BRAZILIAN PASSPORT / SHORT VISIT

Use the Visitor 600 route for a temporary visit

A Brazilian passport is not on the current ETA 601 or eVisitor 651 passport lists. For tourism or visiting family or friends, start with the overseas Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist stream. Choose the real purpose and follow its current eligibility and document prompts in ImmiAccount; a Visitor visa does not permit taking an Australian job. Holding Brazilian residence with another passport does not make that passport Brazilian for visa purposes.

If you plan a longer registered course, check Student visa 500, CRICOS and the passport-and-provider document tool. A first Work and Holiday 462 is a separate option for an extended holiday with short-term work; its age, education, English and cap rules are below. Do not lodge a Visitor application as a way around a paused 462 cap.

BRAZILIAN PASSPORT / FIRST WORK AND HOLIDAY 462

Check the two-year study rule and paused cap

Home Affairs lists Brazil for the first Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462). Its country-cap table showed Brazil paused against an annual cap of 500 first-visa grants on 27 September 2026. A pause can reopen during the program year; Home Affairs says a cap update may take up to 48 hours to appear. Check the live status before attempting an application. Brazil is on this cap path, not the China, India and Vietnam pre-application ballot.

The first-462 age range is 18–30 inclusive when applying, under Home Affairs' Australian Eastern time deadline. Brazil has its own education row: successfully complete at least two years of post-secondary study after Year 12 or equivalent. Do not substitute the different tertiary-qualification row used for many other passports. You also need Functional English evidence through one of the current study, assessment or accepted-test routes; a Brazilian passport alone is not a passport-based exemption. Home Affairs says Brazilian applicants do not need a government-support letter.

Apply for a first 462 online while outside Australia and remain outside for the decision. Check prior 417/462 entry, money for your initial stay and departure, health, character and dependent-child rules in the live instructions. A grant has an entry deadline and visa conditions; wait for the written decision before paying for non-refundable travel. Second and third 462 applications have separate specified-work requirements and are not the same first-visa cap process.

APPLYING WHILE IN BRAZIL

Prepare Portuguese records and follow any later biometrics request

The Australian Embassy in Brazil says most visa applications use ImmiAccount. For non-English documents, including Portuguese, check both the chosen visa's attachment prompts and the Embassy's translation guidance. It asks for the original and English translation together. For official records translated outside Australia, such as birth, marriage, custody, national-ID and police records, its current instructions call for a tradutor juramentado (sworn translator in Brazil). It lists limited exceptions for passports, bank statements and annual tax declarations when their information is clear to an English-only reader; do not apply that exception to every Portuguese document. If applying from another country, check the instructions for that location too.

The Embassy says applicants in Brazil currently do not provide biometrics at lodgement. This does not rule out a later Home Affairs request. If asked, read the individual letter, deadline and current overseas-services directory. Brazil is not on Home Affairs' current Australian Immi App location list, so do not assume the app can replace an in-person step from Brazil. An Embassy or collection service does not make the visa decision.
