COUNTRY GUIDE · UPDATED 2 OCTOBER 2026

Australia visa guide for Colombian passport holders.

Plan an Australian visit or course using your Colombian passport and actual residence. Compare Visitor 600 with Student 500, read the Embassy’s local document guide and follow your own biometrics request.

START WITH THE PASSPORT

Which visa should you check?

Colombian passports are absent from the current ETA 601 and eVisitor 651 lists. For a temporary holiday or family visit from outside Australia, check Visitor 600 Tourist. A residence permit or visa from another country does not change that passport test.

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) tourist stream is a useful first page to review for a visit. Eligibility depends on your exact circumstances. Home Affairs decides applications.

COUNTRY-SPECIFIC NOTE

What else should you know?

The Australian Embassy in Bogotá has no visa-processing office. Its visa page directs applicants to Home Affairs, and its biometrics page lists centres in Bogotá, Medellín and Cali. The current Home Affairs Immi App list includes Colombia only for an eligible AUI-numbered request; read your own letter before booking or using the app.

COLOMBIAN PASSPORT / VISITOR 600

Choose the route for the trip you will actually make

For a temporary holiday or visit to family and friends while outside Australia, check the Visitor 600 overseas Tourist stream. Colombian passports do not appear on Home Affairs' ETA or eVisitor eligibility lists. Living in the US or Europe, or holding their visa or residence permit, does not add a Colombian passport to either list. If you also hold another citizenship, compare the passport you will travel on and disclose the details requested in the application.

Prepare a genuine account of your dates, accommodation, funding and reasons to return to your usual residence. Explain the evidence you have rather than looking for a guaranteed bank balance. An invitation can help explain a family visit, but does not replace the visa's eligibility and funding checks. Apply through the current Home Affairs channel, follow later requests, and read the written grant before finalising travel.

A conference or business meeting needs a separate activity check; taking a job or providing services to an Australian organisation is a work-visa question. A longer registered course needs its own Student 500 preparation.

STUDENT 500 / COLOMBIAN RECORDS

Use the current passport-and-provider list, then the local guide

Confirm the provider and course on CRICOS, obtain the required Confirmation of Enrolment, and run Home Affairs' Student document tool with Colombia and your actual provider. Recheck just before lodging: the tool is routinely updated on 30 September and 31 March, and can change at other times. Its output and the ImmiAccount prompts determine whether financial-capacity and English evidence must be attached at lodgement.

The Embassy currently links a five-page Colombian Student documentation guide, labelled Version 2.1, April 2026 inside the PDF. It supplements Home Affairs guidance. Read its applicability and starred-document notes directly; it is not a universal Visitor checklist or an individual assessment.

  • Its identity examples include both sides of the Cédula de Ciudadanía for applicants over 18. Match national-ID details carefully; its form example uses digits without dots or hyphens.
  • Its funding examples include three months of bank statements, explanations of unusual deposits, DIAN Forms 210 and 220 and the RUT (Form 001). Check the applicable evidence route; a tax record and available bank funds answer different questions.
  • For a relative supporting study, check relationship and support evidence. Answer family questions truthfully; new Student applications generally cannot include family unless an exemption applies, and no new subsequent entrants can be added after grant from 2 October 2026.

Application location changed on 2 October 2026: Home Affairs requires people holding certain temporary visas in Australia to lodge a new Student 500 application offshore and be outside Australia when the visa is granted. Current Student holders have limited exemptions for a further onshore Student application; a Student dependant seeking a primary Student visa must apply offshore. Your Colombian passport and your current visa answer different questions, so check both before paying or lodging.

Do not manufacture records to complete a list. Keep an inventory of originals, translations and the request each file answers. Use truthful Genuine Student answers, the current English-evidence rules, OSHC and any under-18 welfare requirements alongside the local guide.

SPANISH RECORDS / CHECK THE EXACT INSTRUCTIONS

Keep originals and translations organised

The live Student 500 instructions ask for all non-English documents to be translated into English. Visitor preparation also requires English translations and the specified translator details. Keep the original with its translation and check the actual visa's attachment prompts and any later request.

The Colombian Student PDF gives different local instructions on page 5: it describes blue-highlighted records as the minimum for translation, excepts bank and tax records, and asks for separate translation uploads. This differs from the live Student page's general instruction. Ask Home Affairs to clarify before relying on that exception. Record the response with your preparation notes. Do not extend the local Student note to a Visitor application.

Need help clarifying these instructions? Use the current Home Affairs contact information ↗. The Embassy visa-enquiries page ↗ also explains requesting an interpreter. Refer to page 5 of the local PDF and the live Student document instructions when asking about the difference.

ACTUAL RESIDENCE / YOUR REQUEST LETTER

App or collection centre: read the VLN first

The Embassy in Bogotá has no visa-processing office and directs visa enquiries to Home Affairs. Use Home Affairs and ImmiAccount. The Embassy's biometrics page describes collection for applicants of any nationality who apply while in Colombia, subject to exclusions or exemptions, and lists Bogotá, Medellín and Cali. Confirm the current appointment, address and required documents through its linked provider after receiving your request.

Home Affairs' current Australian Immi App location list includes Colombia. The app requires a valid passport and a biometrics letter whose Visa Lodgement Number (VLN) starts AUI. A different prefix requires an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre. Each family member has their own request; another person's app result does not fulfil yours. If you apply while living outside Colombia, follow the service instructions for that actual location.

ONWARD AIRPORT CONNECTION

Do not assume a short connection is visa-free

An ordinary Colombian passport is not on the current citizen list for Transit Without a Visa. A US visa, residence in an eligible country or an eight-hour airside itinerary does not add that passport to the list. Check whether a valid Australian visa already permits the itinerary or whether Transit 771 or another visa is needed. The separate diplomatic-passport rules are not ordinary-passport eligibility.

Check baggage collection, separate tickets, check-in, terminal or airport changes and the onward destination's entry documents. The airline and airport transfer arrangements matter as well as the passport. Do this before buying a connection that depends on passing Australian immigration.
