COUNTRY GUIDE · UPDATED 27 SEPTEMBER 2026

Australia visitor visa guide for Mexican passport holders.

Applying to visit Australia on a Mexican passport? Start with the Visitor 600 Tourist stream, prepare a clear temporary-trip application, and follow the biometrics request for the country where you actually apply. A meeting or conference needs a separate business-visitor activity check.

START WITH THE PASSPORT

Which visitor visa should you check?

A Mexican passport is not on the current ETA 601 or eVisitor 651 passport lists. Visitor 600 Tourist is the starting route for an ordinary holiday or family visit. Mexican residence with another passport does not determine that passport’s visa options; a Mexican passport holder living abroad should use services for their actual location.

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) tourist stream is a useful first page to review for a visit. Eligibility depends on your exact circumstances. Home Affairs decides applications.

COUNTRY-SPECIFIC NOTE

What else should you know?

The Australian Embassy in Mexico does not process visas. It points applicants to Home Affairs and says the Mexico biometrics centre has moved; check the current provider details only after a request. Home Affairs lists Mexico for the Australian Immi App, but only a request letter with a Visa Lodgement Number starting AUI can use it; other letters require centre collection.

MEXICAN PASSPORT / SHORT VISIT

Start with Visitor 600 for a holiday or family visit

The current Home Affairs ETA 601 and eVisitor 651 passport lists do not include a Mexican passport. A US visa, US residence card or home in another country does not add your Mexican passport to those lists. For an ordinary temporary holiday or visit to family or friends, check the Visitor 600 Tourist stream for applicants outside Australia. It is a separate application with its own charge, evidence, stay and grant conditions. If you have another citizenship, compare the visa routes for the passport you will actually use and disclose all citizenships as the application asks.

Describe the real purpose and dates of the visit. Home Affairs asks for a clear passport copy, itinerary or plans, funds for the stay and evidence of reasons to return to your home or usual country of residence. That may be employment, study or family evidence; do not create documents to fit a template. Include an invitation if relevant. A Visitor 600 is not permission to work for an Australian business.

MEETINGS, STUDY OR EMPLOYMENT

Do not use a tourist visit for a different purpose

If the trip is for meetings, negotiations or a conference, check the permitted Visitor 600 Business Visitor activities and their limits. Providing services to an Australian organisation or taking a job is a different work-visa question. If your main purpose is a registered course rather than a short visit, check Student 500 and the provider-specific document tool. The current first Working Holiday 417 and first Work and Holiday 462 passport lists do not include Mexico; holding a US visa or living in an eligible country is not the passport test for those programs.

APPLYING WHILE IN MEXICO

Use Home Affairs and read the biometrics letter

The Australian Embassy in Mexico says it does not process visa applications or answer individual visa enquiries. Lodge and track the chosen visa through the Home Affairs channel on its current visa page. If a biometrics letter arrives, read its Visa Lodgement Number (VLN). Home Affairs lists Mexico among Australian Immi App locations, but the app is only for an eligible request whose VLN starts AUI and a valid passport. If the VLN does not start AUI, Home Affairs says to attend an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre. Do not book collection or assume the app applies before reading your own letter.

The Embassy says the Mexico collection centre has moved. Use its link to the current provider and confirm the address, appointment and documents before travelling. If you apply while resident outside Mexico, use the biometrics services and rules for that location instead of a Mexico appointment. Collection is an identity step, not a decision on the visa.

SPANISH DOCUMENTS

Attach the original and an English translation

For a Visitor application, Home Affairs asks for English translations of documents in other languages. If a translator outside Australia prepares a Spanish-to-English translation, include their full name, address, phone number and qualifications in the language translated from. If an Australian translator prepares it, include their NAATI practitioner number. Check the prompts for your own visa and upload the required original document together with its translation.

Before submitting, check your passport-name spelling, earlier names, visit dates and uploaded files. Keep access to ImmiAccount so you can answer a later request and read the written decision. Check the granted entry period, stay length and conditions before booking non-refundable travel.

AIRPORT TRANSIT IS DIFFERENT

A Mexican citizen may meet the strict airside transit exception

Home Affairs includes Mexican citizens in its Transit Without a Visa list, but only if every condition is met: arrival by air, a confirmed onward flight to a third country within eight hours, valid documents for that destination, and no need to clear immigration or leave the transit lounge. A baggage collection, airport change or separate check-in may require an Australian visa even for an otherwise listed nationality. This exception is for transit, not entry for a holiday or business visit. Check the airline and airport transfer details before travel.
