Find the education and support rows
This lookup covers the first 462 only. It does not test citizenship, previous visas, age, health, character, funds or current application location. The live official visa page controls your application.
San Marino: first-462 preparation
Education
A tertiary qualification from a university, college or training centre, or two completed years of undergraduate university study. The official row accepts degrees, graduate certificates and diplomas, but not Certificates I–IV or a senior secondary certificate alone.
Government support
Home Affairs lists a government-support letter or stated alternative before lodgement: Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
English, ballot and cap
Check the separate Functional English rule. Home Affairs accepts certain passport, study or approved test routes; select the route that you can actually document.
The current first-462 page names China, India and Vietnam for its pre-application ballot; check the live page for changes before lodging. Check whether applications for this passport country are currently open, paused or closed on the live country-cap table.
Also check the 18–30 age range at application, the Australian Eastern time deadline before your 31st birthday, prior 417/462 entry, funds for the stay and departure, dependent-child rules, and the outside-Australia application and decision rule. Follow the current application method and document prompts for this passport.

Choose English evidence before booking a test
The first-462 education row and Functional English are separate requirements. A qualification that satisfies your passport country's education rule does not, by itself, establish the language of instruction or the English-evidence route.
A test is one possible route
The current first-462 instructions also list qualifying citizenship with a valid passport, specified English-medium study, and an Israeli passport with the stated three-unit English Bagrut result. US citizenship and a valid US passport are the relevant passport-only example among the first-462 countries. A US residence permit or studying English as a subject is a different fact.
One study route on the Functional English page is a completed degree, diploma or trade qualification requiring at least two full-time years taught entirely in English. Other school and Australian-study routes have their own duration and institution rules. Read the exact route, then prepare records establishing the award, study period and instruction language; don't infer the result from a course title.
For a test or assessment, check the date as well as the score
First 462 requires the test or assessment to have been taken within 12 months before submitting the visa application. Home Affairs explicitly applies this even to scores above Functional English. A provider's general score-validity period, or another visa's longer period, does not replace this first-462 rule.
| Test | Current minimum reference |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic or General Training | Average band 4.5 |
| PTE Academic | Overall 24 |
| TOEFL iBT | Total 26 |
These three examples are not the full approved-test list. Open the current Functional English table for another test and check any retake restriction against the visa page. PTE's older and newer tests share a name but have different references. At today's review date, a test taken on or before 6 August 2025 is already outside the first-462 12-month window; do not use the older table as a current booking guide.
Home Affairs requires a secure test centre and does not accept wholly remote or at-home tests. For TOEFL iBT, its instructions require the “Taking TOEFL for Australia” registration pathway. Confirm the test version, delivery location and pathway with the provider before paying, and retain the score report. A qualifying English record still leaves the other visa criteria to be met.

Compare the official education and support categories
The table summarises the passport-country rows published by Home Affairs on 27 September 2026. The Swiss support exemption and the Czech, PNG and Spanish education source differences were separately checked in the current instrument on 29 September. A row does not mean an application can currently be lodged: country caps, ballots, application methods and your other criteria still matter. Select a row for its explanation above.

What the table cannot decide
Functional English, money for your stay and departure, health, character, the current cap or ballot, and previous Working Holiday Maker history are separate checks. A government-support document may need to be obtained before lodgement. Use the official visa page and the application instructions for your passport; the date and location of your application can affect the result.
First 462 is for an extended holiday with short-term work. It is not the same as an employer-sponsored work visa, and a Visitor visa or ETA does not permit ordinary employment. Read your own visa grant and work conditions before taking a job.
